Books You Need for the SP-PH Exam

The SP-PH exam is open book — which means your references aren't optional, they're your most important tool. Get the exact editions below. Buying the wrong version can cost you at the testing center.

Affiliate disclosure: Some links below are Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you — it helps keep this study material free. We only recommend the editions actually required for this exam.

1. 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) — Softbound

The core reference for the technical questions. You must use the 2020 edition — older or newer editions will not match the code questions.

ISBN 978-1-4559-2297-0 NFPA 70 Softbound paperback

Avoid these by mistake:
  • Loose-leaf edition (ISBN 978-1-4559-2299-4) — testing centers do not allow loose-leaf references.
  • NEC Handbook (ISBN 978-1-4559-2290-1) — heavier and pricier with extra commentary you don't need; the plain softbound is the standard exam book.

2. NASCLA Contractors Guide — NC Electrical, 13th Edition

Covers the business, law, and project-management portion of the exam. It must be the North Carolina Electrical, 13th edition specifically — not another state or an older edition.

ISBN 978-1-948558-12-9 13th Edition NC Electrical

3. NC Electrical Contractors Licensing Law — FREE

The licensing rules (G.S. 87, Article 4 and Title 21 NCAC 18B) are published free by the state. Don't pay for these — download and tab them.

Get them from the NC Board →

Maybe: National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72, 2013)

The board lists NFPA 72 among study materials for the special-restricted exams in general, but it's primarily relevant to the fire alarm / low-voltage (SP-FALV) classification. For SP-PH it is likely not needed.

Verify with PSI / the exam handbook before buying this one — don't spend money you don't have to.

Pro tip: Once you have the books, don't just read them — tab and drill them. The exam rewards how fast you can find a rule, not whether you've memorized it.

Books in hand? Start drilling.
